A young Liisa Heinonen-Miller—daughter of former UO women's track and field/cross country coach Tom Heinonen—and friend Cody Schram at a summer "All-Comers" meet at Hayward Field, circa 1989.
Coach Bill Bowerman began the Hayward All-Comers tradition in the late 1940s and the meets have been held every summer since the mid-1950s. Part of the magic of Hayward Field is that it can be enjoyed by everyone, and All-Comers meets are a key element in that. Anyone of any age can sign up and compete against other community members in their age group on that historic turf. And you never know, one of those kids, toddling down the track in the July or August sunshine, just might grow up to be the next great Olympian.
