From its southwest corner, a statue of Bill Bowerman watches over Hayward Field. Created by artist Diana Lee Jackson, the statue stands atop a plate of waffle irons with a plaque that reads, "Teacher, Innovator, Visionary, Motivator... And then there was that waffle iron." #Bowerman coached #Oregon track and field from 1948 to 1972, two of his most notable athletes being Steve #Prefontaine and Phil Knight, the latter of whom he went on to co-found Nike, Inc. (originally Blue Ribbon Sports) with in 1964. He created the first 'waffle sole' running shoes in 1971, using his wife's waffle iron. He is also a co-founder of one of the first American post-collegiate #track clubs, Athletics West, and credited with starting the American #jogging boom in the 1960s after a trip to New Zealand.
