Trailblazers like Jason Collins are so important for the future of queer folks in sports. Thank you, Jason! 🙌🏀🏳️‍🌈⁣⁣ •⁣⁣⁣ Back in 2013, NBA center Jason Collins became the first male athlete to publicly announce that he was gay while still active in an American professional sport. 💪⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ While there is still a lingering perception that male athletes are slower to accept the idea of gay players than their female counterparts, athletes like Collins, and more recently ex-NFLer Carl Nassib coming out, have propelled acceptance forward, and we hope that trend continues for years (and seasons) to come. 🙌⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ The GIST is continuing to highlight important LGBTQIA+ figures in sports this month, as well as important cultural moments in pride’s history.
