Losing abdominal or belly fat, is a common weight loss goal I see in my clients! This is actually a very good goal to set because excessive abdominal fat is very unhealthy on anyone’s frame but maybe more so on women than men! A larger waist-to-hip ratio, in particular, appeared to be a bigger heart attack risk factor for women than men. A recent study showed that compared with BMI, waist-to-hip ratio was 18% stronger as a heart attack predictor in women. Weight gain around the middle represents an increase in the amount of visceral fat, the type of fat that encases your internal organs which is not good. So what is your waist to hip ratio and what should it be? Here's how to calculate: Measure around the widest part of your hips and the narrowest part of your waist, which is just above your navel.
