Okay, we know what you’re thinking: What the duck do wetlands have to do with rice?! You’ve come to the right place 🤓
🌾 Our family’s farms are part of the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory pathway for more than a billion birds. Yeah, a billion. But our region’s natural wetlands have been disappearing for decades. Today, up to 95% of them are gone! So, each winter, we flood some of our fields to replicate California’s natural wetlands, providing vital food and habitat for thousands of migratory birds as they travel the Pacific Flyway.
🦢 The birds aren’t the only ones who benefit. They also chow down on weed seeds, which is great for regenerative organic farmers like us (you know, since we use water instead of chemicals to kill weeds). Plus, the birds’ feet press nutrient-rich rice straw into contact with the soil, which decomposes the rice straw and turns it into mulch for the next year’s crop!
