Laila decides to rise by actively serving her community. “Being a Florida Cicerone has given me the unique experience of serving my university, while simultaneously serving the surrounding community. Throughout my time in Gainesville, I have done work within several prisons, the Alachua County Crisis Center, Shands Children’s Hospital, Alachua County Public Schools, and Special Olympics. My volunteer work has become one of my greatest sources of joy and fulfillment. It is easy as a student at UF to forget that we are not just a community within a community. Instead, we are part of a larger area and population that we can support and improve with our skills, passions, and talents. We have the opportunity as students to bridge our university with the Gainesville area. If we put as much pride into the areas of Gainesville that need assistance as we do into UF, we can give back in tremendous ways, making life more beautiful on campus and in the city.
