There's a beautiful element of memory to the story. Set in 1982, just after summer camp, with Swanna situated right at that coming-of-age turning point: both of these suffuse the story with a sense of nostalgia that blurs, much like a distant memory. Jennifer Belle deftly elaborates upon what it is to be fourteen, and furious with your parents, and forced to be the only responsible adult when those around her have failed, but a deeply uncertain, fallible impression of one.
