Not just for Brautigan's sparse and up-tempo writing style, but for his reflective exploration of choice and adolescent potential. The narrator, a child, accidentally kills his friend while on a hunting trip. He used his friend's rifle; something that his friend carried often through the dusty malaise of 70s suburban Oregon, always looking for someone with ammunition. The boy was always going to die, but was the narrator's choice to buy that bullet instead of a hamburger an act of fate?
