Quick throwback Thursday to 2012! This is another one of my favorite performances, with one of my favorite katas! :) Anyways, wow. I’m skinny. Lol I still competed in kumite back then, so I was about 58~60kg.

We rarely see bassai katas at tournaments nowadays, and I really miss it! As the kata name describes, (抜塞 - to penetrate fortress) power and speed is the key to essentially defeat a strong defense or opponent. But the kata also teaches fluidity in the techniques. It’s possibly to teach us that force and power is not everything. Using the opponents force and channeling their techniques can also be a way to defeat an opponent. Therefore, a lot of weight shifting and catching blocks are seen in this kata. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This kata really taught me how to analyze a kata, the importance of it. It also made me realize the true meaning of what the past karate masters wanted to teach us. :)

Gotta love the lean. 👍🏻 I’ll enjoy it while I can do it! Lol ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
