If you really want to strike gold in Las Vegas, skip the casinos and head to the nearby ghost town of Nelson, Nevada where you’ll find the Techatticup Mine—the biggest and richest gold mine of its era. Centuries ago, it was home to both Union and Confederate deserters who would attempt to escape the dangers of the battlefield. Like a scene out of a movie, Nelson was truly the Wild West, inhabited by Jesse James-esque outlaws who wouldn't hesitate to shoot somebody over a game of cards.
Now, this lawless land welcomes locals and visitors for tours (they’re only $20) where a guide with a lantern will take you through underground tunnels and enlighten you with stories of the murders that took place under your very own feet. Would you be brave enough to sign up for this? If not, no sweat, you can enjoy the beach at Nelson’s Landing only five miles down the road while your travel companions embark on the 90-minute tour.
