🪸 Rewilding the Galápagos and Cocos Islands by combating marine invasive species! The introduction of non-native species is arguably the largest driver of biodiversity loss for islands in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Between these islands, more than 60 marine invasive species have been identified by researchers...but there could be more. Conservationists in the Eastern Tropical Pacific are working to protect these sensitive islands and marine ecosystems. Researchers have assessed the invasion of invasive species on the islands and determined that these species made their way to the Galápagos and Cocos Islands on the hulls of cargo ships. charlesdarwinfoundation, rewild, and local partners are developing collaborative tools and marine biosecurity protocols to combat this threat. We are helping to survey invasive species to monitor which are present, and if efforts (such as requiring all boats to scrub their hulls before entering the marine protected areas or reserves) are effectiv...
