Satellite imagery documents the immense scale of the industrial marine hunting industry. A recently published paper in Nature shares that about 3/4 of all industrial fishing vessels are not publicly tracked. The satellite analysis also showed the regular presence of fishing boats in Marine Protected Areas such as those in the Galapagos Islands. This new technology has revealed that industrial marine hunting is causing far more harm than publicly available data suggests. Additionally, the study found that the industrial marine hunting industry in Asia is systematically under-represented. Countries like Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar track practically zero fishing activities off their coasts. New satellite images show China alone accounts for some 30% of all fishing on the planet. One of the most effective solutions to this boom in industrial marine hunting begins with shifting our diets towards more plants and fungi.
