At the age of 15, on his family's ranch in central Bolivia, Heinz Arno Drawert noticed a fish in a puddle left behind by the rain.
Heinz was passionate about freshwater fish and knew he hadn't seen this sort of killifish before. He never forgot about the sighting either. Fast forward 25 years, Heinz--now a researcher with the Museum of Natural History Noel Kempff Mercado and the killifish_foundation--officially introduced the Juan Deriba Killifish as a new species to science.
This newly discovered killifish is even able to jump out of the water onto nearby vegetation to avoid predators. “They are, for me, the most intelligent fishes you can find,” says Heinz.
