Freshwater lakes on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are bursting with life, including species found nowhere else. The endemic fish, invertebrates, and plants are part of an aquatic community that is irreplaceable, but also at risk from invasive species, mining, sedimentation, and collection for the aquaria pet trade. Re:wild and partners shoal_org and Yayasan Bumi Sawerigading work with local fishing communities to reduce the impact of invasive species by monitoring Sulawesi’s freshwater lakes and removing invasives found there. We also work directly with Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark to create insurance populations of more than 40 endemic species including species of fish, shrimp, and snails from the seven lakes of Sulawesi where they can be bred for eventual release back into the wild once threats to their survival have been mitigated. #WorldWaterWeek #wwweek #futureforfreshwaterfish Photo credits: SHOAL, Yayasan Bumi Sawerigading, and Sulawesi Keepers
