In San Jacinto, Ecuador, local communities held their annual amphibian festival to celebrate their region’s rich biodiversity, including their beloved Coyne’s Harlequin Toad — a species considered a key indicator of ecosystem health.
However, these toads are under threat. The gradual vanishing of harlequin toads from rainforest ecosystems since the 1980s is a warning of ecosystems out of balance.
Thanks to disneyconservation, Re:wild and our partners from the
#AtelopusSurvivalInitiative — centrojambatu and bioparqueamaru — are working with communities to protect harlequin toads, the “jewels of the forests”, while raising awareness around the importance of healthy watersheds and forests for our shared wellbeing.
