Congratulations to Ecuador and Costa Rica for making huge strides to protect the Galápagos archipelago and the Eastern Tropical Pacific! Since 2021, Ecuador and Costa Rica have created and expanded marine protected areas between the Galápagos and Cocos Islands. Together, these areas protec a nearly 140,000 square-mile (360,000 square-kilometer) marine corridor that is critical to ocean health. With the help of the largest debt-for-climate conversion in history, #Ecuador has restructured the country’s debt and part of the proceeds will be invested in a fund for conservation efforts. #CostaRica has created a fund to manage marine protected areas with philanthropic support.
