Nearly four years after the Santiam fire swept through the Santiam Canyon, burning nearly 400,000 acres, killing several people and destroying homes in nearby towns, one of the area’s most beloved recreation areas is finally reopening. The Oregon Department of Forestry announced Monday that the Butte Creek Falls recreation area would reopen to the public June 21, offering renewed access to “one of the true gems” of the Santiam State Forest. The recreation area, which includes a small campground, shooting range and hiking trails that lead to two waterfalls – Upper Butte Creek Falls and Lower Butte Creek Falls – is found outside Silverton, just northeast of Silver Falls State Park.
