Ivan McClellan isn’t reinventing the rodeo, he says, just shining a light on an often overshadowed aspect of cowboy culture: Black cowboys and cowgirls.
From his photography book, “Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture,” to his first Black rodeo event in Portland, McClellan is redefining the American cowboy.
For nearly a decade, the Portland-based photographer traveled all over the United States, meeting the Black cowboys and cowgirls featured in his work. After learning so much about rodeo culture, McClellan decided to start his own Black rodeo, the Eight Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo, which debuted last year at the Portland Expo Center.
The second annual Eight Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo took place Sunday, June 16, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The event was scaled up in every way: more seats, more anticipation and more to experience.
