30 years ago today, the USA 1994 World Cup kicked off at Chicago’s Soldier Field. It was arguably the most important weekend in our soccer history, and longtime soccer photographer Jon van Woerden was there to capture it in all its glory.
At the opening ceremony, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Clinton shared presenting duties, Daryl Hall serenaded the crowd, and singer Diana Ross whiffed an infamous penalty from three yards out. On the pitch, our future gaffer Jurgen Klinsmann scored the first goal of the whole tournament to give Germany a narrow 1-0 victory over Bolivia. The shot of Jurgen spreading his arms in joy would wind up on posters worldwide and foreshadow the grandeur of the tournament about to unfold.
The following day, the USMNT made its much-anticipated debut in front of a sold-out Pontiac Silverdome. The denim kits stole the limelight and Eric Wynalda grabbed the headlines with a crucial equalizer against Switzerland.
