On this day 30 years ago, the 1994 World Cup kicked off in Chicago with a game between Germany and Bolivia. Although Germany and Bolivia were in Group C, they played the first game as defending champions used to play the first game in the World Cup instead of the host. Germany won 1-0 that game, thanks to a goal from Jurgen Klinsmann. He would move permanently to the U.S. four years later with his American wife, and become the head coach of the USMNT in 2011. He still lives in California now. The USMNT defeated Colombia in that World Cup, and reached the knockout stage where they barely lost 1-0 to Brazil, who would go on to win the tournament. We have just three more days until the U.S. hosts another major tournament, this time the Copa América. The USMNT can face either Brazil or Colombia in the knockout stage, the two teams the Americans played 30 years ago and the two teams they also played last week.
