Dr. Akhmad left #Afghanistan as a girl and found a warm welcome in #Ukraine with her family. “They say that lightning doesn’t strike twice. Well, it did for me and my family. First, we had to leave Afghanistan, and then in 2022 we were also forced to leave our new lives in Ukraine,” she says. Today, she’s studying for her PhD in #Germany, but getting there hasn’t been easy, marked by cultural, educational, financial, religious and linguistic challenges. “Yet, I believe I am living testament to the indomitable spirit of refugees,” she says. Around the world, conflict, the climate crisis and other threats have forced millions of people from their homes. The #UnitedNations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) works to help those #ForcedToFlee to rebuild their lives in new countries and make positive contributions to their new home communities.
