An estimated half a million women and girls worldwide are living with obstetric fistula today. This tragic childbirth injury is caused by prolonged, obstructed labour in the absence of timely and adequate medical care. It leaves women and girls with a hole between the birth canal and bladder and/or rectum, which can result in chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty. On Tuesday's International Day to #EndFistula, the #UnitedNations Population Fund (UNFPA) is working to spread the message: no woman should suffer needlessly from a preventable condition like fistula.
