#TBT to 1976, when Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, visited #UnitedNations Headquarters in #NYC. Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world's first woman Prime Minister in 1960. She’s pictured here with the then UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim (left) and the president of the General Assembly, Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe. Women are underrepresented at all levels of decision-making worldwide. Today, only 17 countries have a woman Head of State and 19 countries have a woman Head of Government. At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. Women’s equal participation and leadership in political and public life are essential to build more inclusive and just societies. Regram: unwomen I 📸: UN Photo/Yutaka Nagata #GenerationEquality
