#WorldPrematurityDay.
Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm; defined as a birth that takes place before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Complications from prematurity claim more than 1 million babies every year. The majority of these deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries due to a lack of adequate newborn care.
Preventing deaths and complications from preterm birth starts with a healthy pregnancy. The World Health Organization (who) recommends antenatal care that includes regular check-ups with health professionals throughout pregnancy to identify and manage risks.
Once the baby is born, skin-to-skin contact, also known as 'kangaroo care', and breastfeeding are essential, particularly for preterm babies.
