The wait is over! @michigancentraldetroit and Ford Motor Co. are letting us share photos of the finished product of a six-year renovation by 3,100 men and women who worked 1.7 million combined hours to bring Michigan Central Station back from the brink. Throughout the day, we have been sharing some incredible before-and-after images showing that these skilled-tradespeople have accomplished what so many said couldn't be done. Behold the incredible restoration of the station's historic waiting room, or as Michigan Central is now calling it, the Grand Hall. Lighting fixtures were re-created from original station plans. The 29,000 Guastavino tiles in the vaults were painstakingly restored, and 8.7 miles of grout were used to secure them in place - all but about 1,300 of the tiles are originals (some of the old ones had either fallen or were too damaged to save).
