We went to Vermont this weekend and I want to share the best part of our trip. On Saturday morning we stopped in a small general store in a small town called Newfane (pop. 1,608) to get a bite to eat. There was a young couple waiting in line for their food. The young woman, who I soon learned was named Victoria, comes over and asks to pet “the adorable loaf.” I say of course. She kneels down.
Victoria: Boy…? Girl…?
Me: Girl. Her name’s Maxine.
Victoria: Oh I follow a Max on Instagram.
Me: Oh funny. Which one?
Victoria: The one who rides in the backpack.
Me (Smiling under my mask): That’s her.
Over the next several minutes, there was a lot of shouting and laughter. Victoria stopped casually kneeling and got comfortable on the ground next to Maxine as she whipped out her phone and started snapping selfies (she asked of course).
