Join us to commemorate and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Summer!
βπΏ In 1964, hundreds of brave college students joined local activists in Mississippi to register Black voters. Four major civil rights organizations organized the project: SNCC (sncclegacy), CORE ββ(dcracialequity), NAACP, and SCLC.
At that time, Black Americans in Mississippi were incredibly disenfranchised. Organizers of the Freedom Summer focused on the state because it had the lowest rate of Black voter registration despite Blacks making up β
of the population.
Freedom Summer focused on changing this. ππΏ Follow along to learn what happened next.
