On this day 30 years ago, the USMNT played their first ever home World Cup game. The USMNT’s 1994 World Cup campaign got underway on June 18, 1994 when they faced Switzerland in Pontiac, Michigan. The game also made history by becoming the first World Cup game to be held indoors. It was played in 80,000 seater Silverdome— which got demolished few years ago. The stadium featured a fiberglass fabric roof held up by air pressure. The game kicked off at 11:30am during an extremely hot time of the day when the temperatures hit around 95°F. Although the players didn’t have to deal with the sun, the stadium became very hot and humid, leading Switzerland’s then-coach Roy Hodgson to complain afterwards. It finished 1-1 with Eric Wynalda scoring for the Americans.
