This week, UNCUT strives to commemorate Juneteenth, a day in which we recognize and honor the resilience and strength within the African American community. Juneteenth not only highlights a day in which freedom perseveres, but it also remains a powerful reminder of both the triumphs and struggles endured to reach such freedoms and equality. On June 19th, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas. On this day the army announced that over 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. Celebrations erupted and Juneteenth became a symbol of liberation and a day that embodied hope. As we reflect on Juneteenth, it is vital we recognize the innumerable sacrifices made by individuals who fought the institution of slavery.
