Today, June 19, marks the conclusion of our retrospective on the history of Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger announced the end of slavery in Galveston, 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This event is now known as “Juneteenth.” Houston played a significant role in the celebrations due to its large African American population and historical ties to the abolitionist movement. The city hosts various events, including parades, festivals, educational programs, and community gatherings, to honor this important milestone in American history. Juneteenth is also referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
