Jewish Budapest: The Last Surviving Ghetto Wall Fragment.
The Jewish Ghetto was formed by the Nazis and their accomplices in the Jewish quarter of Budapest, where 70,000 Jews were forced to move into in November 1944.
Thousands were shot dead, and thousands more died of starvation and the bitter cold.
The last original Ghetto Wall was destroyed in 2006. However, a 30 meters fragment of it was reconstructed in 2010 (minus the original barbed wire) in a private courtyard at 15 Király Utca, where it now stands as a memorial to the Jewish Ghetto of Budapest.
While its location is authentic, as Király Utica was part of the former Jewish Ghetto, this last surviving fragment of the wall is completely hidden out of sight, in the backyard of a private property.
The entrance (picture 8) may seem ordinary, but going inside is like stepping back in time, as the property itself (picture 6) still looks as it did in the 1940’s.
