Today we’re thinking of Bob Santos, and the legacy of his leadership as a Filipino American activist. Many people came to know him as Uncle Bob for his impact on young activists, who shared his passion for defending the International District from gentrification and corporate development. He was one of the most ardent supporters of the civil rights struggle in Seattle through the 1960s. Alongside Bernie Whitebear, Roberto Maestas, and Larry Gossett, he contributed to cultivating a multiracial understanding of social justice across Seattle’s activist spaces. Uncle Bob’s commitment to multiracial coalition building and community engaged activism inspires us every day.
