2009 was an exceptionally tough year for Gary during his deployment in Afghanistan. As a member of the “Death Dealers,” his platoon faced immense danger daily. On a mission, his truck hit a 500-pound pressure plate lED, creating a massive crater and leaving Gary severely traumatized. The aftermath led to TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and severe PTSD, turning everyday life into a struggle. A year later, overwhelmed by despair, Gary believed ending his life was the best option for his loved ones. In a last-ditch effort, he called his parents to say goodbye. Thankfully, they contacted 911, and officers arrived just in time to save him. Gary’s turning point came when he connected with the SHARE Military Initiative at shepherdcenter. They provided the support he desperately needed, helping him set and achieve personal goals.
