Junior Gustie Swimmer Ryan Sklar has been waiting 11 years for his Amorphophallus konjac to bloom. Ryan brought it from Singapore to his home in Oregon and then finally to Gustavus. It’s been quite the journey!! The bloom only lasts for a day or two, so it’s a very special occasion! Gustavus’ original Amorphophallus titanum (corpse flower) (Named Perry) is behind Ryan. Perry came to the College when Professor of Chemistry Brian O’Brien received 20 seeds in 1993 from a San Francisco physician named James Symon. After years of careful cultivation, the plant finally bloomed for the first time in 2007. #whygustavus #gustavusswimdive #corpseflower #amorphophallustitanum #proudplantparent
