This year, we’re celebrating the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer, a 1964 voter registration drive that significantly increased the number of registered Black voters in Mississippi.
In 1964, Robert Moses, a local secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) sncclegacy, hatched a plan to fight against disenfranchisement in Mississippi.
The goal?
🏫 To establish Freedom Schools and community centers throughout Mississippi.
🗳️ To increase Black voter registration.
🏛️ To challenge the all-white delegation that would represent Mississippi at the Democratic National Convention.
They succeeded. ✊🏾
Stay tuned to learn about the heroes and events of this historic summer–starting with the SNCC activist Robert Moses!
