You can balance a fork and spoon on the edge of a glass using a match (and the knowledge of the center of mass!!)😱
The center of mass is the average position of all the mass in an object. For simple objects (ones that are symmetrical about the X, Y, and Z axes) it's pretty easy to know where the center of mass is.
But for irregularly shaped objects, it may not be quite as intuitive🤔 - like this fork-spoon system we've created. The center of mass can actually be *outside* the object. 🤯
The center of mass is useful to know when you're trying to figure out how to balance something. Because gravity acts downward 👇🏼, if you put a balancing point under the center of mass, you can balance your object!
