Sometimes, after you ask someone to repeat what they’ve said five times, you resign to simply smiling and nodding without understanding them. It’s possible that there’s a more extensive explanation for this miscommunication. Jo McCulloch Bailey ’65 writes about her experience with hearing loss and how the gradual process and little details that escaped her altered her life. She grew up knowing she had hearing difficulties but never thought that it was anything serious. Singing “O Kinky Turtle” instead of “O King Eternal” in her youth choir didn’t ring strangely for her until later on. She says: “Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition facing adults over age 65.” It usually comes around gradually, and you don’t realize that this change is happening.
