#MeetTheTeam
Meet Liz Bishop, a Trustee of the NZ Horse Ambulance Trust, and Toby, a chestnut standardbred who raced as Bordeaux.
Toby was adopted by Liz out of the HERO programme, a scheme run by HRNZ to re-train standardbreds as riding horses when they retire from the sport. The 10-year-old trotter won 11 races before being retired in March last year.
Liz and her husband are keen trekkers and love the calm and 'can do' character of the standardbred. They have owned seven standardbreds, with four off the track. Liz' semi-retired standardbred, Rocky was NZ national champion at competitive trail riding, and Canterbury champion for five years so was quite the athlete!
Many trekking centres use standardbreds and they are popular with people doing the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust Cavalcade, an annual horse trek in Otago over 6 - 7 days.
Toby has settled into life on the farm with Liz and paddock-mates Chuck and Rocky, though with that hairdo he thinks that he is the
#ManeMan.
