I always find the relationship of John and Peter very interesting… it’s almost as if there’s a quiet contention between them. We see this a couple of times in the book of John—one where John outruns Peter after the resurrection, and another time when Jesus appears to the seven disciples on shore and has breakfast waiting for them; once the men arrive on shore, Jesus talks to Peter and asks the same question repeatedly: “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?… Do you love me?… Do you love me?” (Seriously if you haven’t read this in a minute, go and read the last two chapters of John—John 20 and 21.)
As the final chapter continues, we see Jesus essentially telling Peter by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus encourages him: “Follow me.” (Basically—things are going to get difficult, but focus on following me.)
But Peter takes his eyes OFF of Jesus and gets distracted worrying about the other guy—John. ...
