The battle of Chester. It was a proper season opener in Chester, PA yesterday between the Philadelphia Union and Minnesota United — goals, flares, and gold chains included. The Union and the ‘Loons’ both showed signs of rust throughout the match, failing to capitalize in the final third. Still, MNUFC would jump to score first in the 23rd minute, thanks to a well-worked counter attack that was finished off in style by Robin Lod. The lead didn’t last long, though, as the Union got right back in it with a Cory Burke header just twelve minutes later. The crowd was jumping, but the score wouldn’t move for the next 50 minutes, despite both teams having decent chances. The final touch just simply wasn’t there. The Union and the Loons will have to wait to earn their first three points.
