In the first installment of our #DefendersOfTheDen series, meet the go-to person for all things facilities management at our New York City campus: facilities supervisor Rafael Garcias, Jr. While many are making their way home for dinner, Garcias is waking up and preparing to start his day. His shift (Monday through Friday, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) is one he thoroughly enjoys, thanks to colleagues like Segundo Paredes (you'll learn more about him in our next installment). "I get to work with the most wonderful and amazing personnel," says Garcias. As a Defender of the Den, Garcias protects New York Tech in a number of ways, from supervising the facilities staff, which includes custodians and technicians, to coordinating installations of heat and electricity. He also maintains the university's facilities to meet health and safety standards, which has been critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.
