The ultimate underdogs. With Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd missing the NWSL Challenge Cup due to injuries, many fans and pundits did not rank @skybluefc among the favorites going into the tournament. Having also finished 8th (out of 9) last season, it’s understandable why Sky Blue FC were overlooked. Today, though, they anxiously await their semifinal match on Wednesday after beating the Washington Spirit in the quarterfinals over the weekend. In the preliminary round, Sky Blue FC finished second-to-last, and they entered the knockout stage as the #7 seed. In an impressive defensive performance, Sky Blue FC took down the #2 seed Washington Spirit, and they now have a shot at booking a ticket to the grand final. The Chicago Red Stars (2019 NWSL Championship runner-ups) and Julie Ertz stand in their way, though, and they won’t be an easy hurdle to clear. Nevertheless, it might not be wise to underestimate the Sky Blue FC any longer. 📸: @lpnine from last year’s @skybluefc vs @olreign matc...
