⚡️Peak Power is thrown around a lot in Strength & Conditioning — where does Peak Power occur in a vertical jump?
Peak Power occurs in the propulsive phase (push-off portion, 👀 green shaded region) of the CMJ. It is calculated by multiplying combined force & velocity, then sourcing the highest value.
There is a sweet spot where Force is still high (not the highest) and Velocity is also high (not the highest) to produce the highest Power value. Thus, Peak Power — we call this metric Peak Propulsive Power. Propulsive identifies the phase in which it occurs. On the contrary, we also report Peak Braking Power.
Peak Propulsive Power happens immediately after Peak Velocity and right before Takeoff Velocity. The relationship between these three metrics is an important concept to understand.
*Remember, Takeoff Velocity is what Jump Height is calculated from.
