Happy National Day of the Horse!
This day celebrates the economic, historic, and cultural contributions that horses have made to the country. Maryland has a rich horse culture and this heritage can be seen in everything from equestrian sports to commerce, from horse racing and jousting to Baltimore’s arabbers selling fruits and vegetables out of colorful, horse-drawn carts.
The most famous Maryland horse tradition is of course the running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The race typically takes place on the third Saturday of May, welcoming tens of thousands of fans to witness this major event.
