#Onthisday in 1865: This print is from page 25 of the September 30, 1865 issue of “Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper” depicting an “every day scene” of formerly enslaved people arriving in Baltimore, Maryland.
Like several other border states that practiced slavery yet remained in the Union, Maryland was not subject to President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863. Maryland would not formally abolish slavery until November 1, 1864, when the state adopted a new constitution by a narrow vote. Slavery was not abolished nationwide until the 13th Amendment was finally ratified in December 1865.
This year, the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) recognizes Maryland’s Emancipation Day on November 1st with a free virtual program exploring Maryland’s fraught path to abolition and the eventual celebrations of freedom. Registration is open via the link in our bio.
