One of the highlights of summer programs at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is the Summer Teacher Institute. For five days, we welcome qualifying educators from across the state to engage with collections and historical materials relating to an annual theme. In July, MCHC welcomed educators to discover the theme of “Liberty and Justice for All? Freedom and Citizenship in the New Republic.” Participants explored the history of the Mid-Atlantic throughout the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Early National Period via concepts such as enslavement and freedom. This program offers scholarly presentations, take-home resources for the classroom, and extensive access to MCHC’s primary source collections. This year’s group went beyond our campus to visit historical sites throughout Maryland–deepening their understanding of the Early American period at Fort McHenry and Riversdale House Museum.
