Did you know the history of drag performers dates back to Ancient Greece, where men would play female roles in stage productions, and that it wasn't until drag was linked to homosexuality that it became taboo in the United States? Hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community led to, among other things, anti-cross-dressing laws in the 1950s. For example, in New York, a man could be arrested for drag if he were wearing fewer than three articles of male clothing. In 2017, an exhibition at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC), “Structure & Perspective: David Brewster Explores Maryland’s Social Landscape,” juxtaposed commissioned works by Brewster with the MCHC collection and loans to interpret themes ranging from gender and race to urban decay and suburban sprawl. This drag costume was a prominent aspect of the exhibition, and the accompanying blog post explores the evolution of dressing in drag throughout history.
