Congratulations to the winners of the Award for Excellence in Maryland History, an award sponsored by the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) and one of the many awards offered during Maryland History Day 2023 by mdhumanities. One of this year’s winners is Leslie Monter Casio from North Caroline High School. Casio’s project examined the impact of the HeLa cell line on medical history. This ‘immortal’ cell line taken from Marylander Henrietta Lacks in 1951 is attributed to thousands of medical findings from vaccine development to human genome mapping. The nature of its discovery and commercialization inspired medical ethics debates that continue today. Each year, this award is presented to students exhibiting exceptional skills in their telling of Maryland's history. Find out more information on Casio’s and the other winners’ projects at the link in our bio. #Maryland #History #Culture #MDHistoryDay #BaltimoreCounty #CarolineCounty #HeLaCellLine #Medicine #MedicalHisto...
