The Academy Awards are about to begin. Do you have a box of popcorn ready?
The price of popcorn isn’t the only thing that has changed about going to the movies over the course of the last century. At Baltimore City’s peak population in 1950, residents had 119 cinemas to choose from but by 2020, only five options remained.
Visit our exhibition, “Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters,” brought to you by PNCBank, to learn about the transition from outdoor theaters to storefront nickelodeons to movie palaces, the desegregation of theaters, and why so many of these spaces that were once community pillars have now been razed to the ground or converted into shops and houses of worship.
