The special 2020 issue of “Maryland Historical Magazine” is available. In “A Home of Their Own: African Americans and the Evolution of Unionville, Maryland,” Dr. William F. Messner explores the history of this all-Black community in Talbot County founded after the Civil War. Unionville was not only home to hundreds of African Americans, but also served as a safe haven for Black people against the discrimination of white landowners and as a gathering place for the wider Black community.
